Classes

All the following classes are taught by Joel Adams, a theatrical director, teacher, writer, and actor with decades of experience in classical theatre, mime, improvisation, experimental theatre, forum theatre, children’s theatre, radio plays, voiceovers, and film and TV. He was educated in Theatre Arts (acting and directing) at Baylor University Theatre in the USA and has been active ever since on three continents. He founded Theatrix in Phuket in 2014 and has taught hundreds of students of all ages in the years that followed.

Acting with Joel Adams
Acting for Kids, ages 8 - 10

The students first learn the basics of voice and speech, body and movement, and memorization and concentration before launching into presentations of appropriate plays for their age and talent. My students learn mime, vocal control and projection, stage technique, scene and character analysis, and more. They have devised and created their own mimes and now are working on devising their own short scripted plays.

Many of the students go on to be in Theatrix productions such as the panto or other child-appropriate plays.

Some of the many benefits of our classes for these younger children are:

They overcome shyness and stage fright

They learn to work as a team with other students

They learn empathy and understanding of those outside their own circle, nationality or ethnic community

They are introduced to a wide variety of stories with important messages

They learn to use the actor’s instrument (body, voice, and mind) to tell stories to an audience

Acting for Kids, ages 11, 12

At this age the students further fine-tune their skills and learn deeper character and scene analysis.

They learn about the story arc, with an exposition, precipitating incident, rising action, climax, and resolution.

They learn about character objectives and back stories of characters.

They learn the importance of conflict in a play.

They learn monologue performance and even write their own.

They are introduced to various styles of performance and plays and how to perform them.

Acting for Kids, 13 -15

Here they hone their skills still further, developing their own unique style.

They learn flexibility of voice and body and creation of characters unlike themselves.

They are challenged to widen their comfort zone and learn true artistic freedom.

Most of these students get an opportunity to perform in mainstage productions and to work with adult professionals and semi-professionals, further stretching themselves.

Acting for adults and older teens, ages 16 and up

In these classes they are introduced to various acting methods, such as Stanislavski, Meisner, Adler, and more.

They learn to listen and respond deeply to their fellow actor(s).

They go deeper into various acting styles, realistic, classical, non-realistic, expressionistic, absurdist, and more.

They learn the basics of directing and are given the opportunity to direct their own scenes with their fellow students.
