Phuket’s beloved Theatrix Group in cooperation with the Junkyard Theatre has once again outdone itself with its latest production, a vibrant and rollicking pantomime adaptation of “Treasure Island.” This reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure story is a joyful romp that has captivated audiences of all ages with its humor, creativity, and sheer sense of fun.

The Junkyard Theatre, known for its unique aesthetic and community spirit, provides the perfect backdrop for this larger-than-life panto. The theatre’s eclectic setting, constructed from an array of repurposed materials, enhances the playful atmosphere of the show. From the moment audiences step into the theater, they are immersed in a world where imagination reigns supreme.

“Treasure Island” tells the tale of young Jim Hawkins and his quest for hidden treasure, accompanied by a motley crew of characters including the cunning Long John Silver. The panto adaptation amplifies the story’s humor and adventure, incorporating slapstick comedy, catchy musical numbers, and plenty of audience interaction. The result is a lively, engaging production that keeps spectators laughing and cheering from start to finish.

The cast is exceptional, bringing both energy and charisma to their roles. Jim Hawkins, portrayed by Vlad Rudi, exudes a sense of wonder and bravery that is both endearing and inspiring. Long John Silver, played by Tony Edwards with devilish charm, strikes the perfect balance between villainy and humor, making him a crowd favorite. The supporting cast, including bumbling pirates, flamboyant sea captains, and a sassy parrot, all contribute to the show’s vibrant dynamic.

One of the standout features of this production is its inventive use of props and set pieces. True to the Junkyard Theater’s ethos, the set design is a creative marvel, utilizing recycled and upcycled materials to create everything from the Hispaniola ship to Treasure Island itself.

The musical numbers are expertly choreographed and performed, adding an extra layer of entertainment and helping to drive the narrative forward. Audiences are encouraged to sing along, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared enjoyment.

Audience participation is a hallmark of any good panto, and “Treasure Island” is no exception. The actors frequently break the fourth wall, inviting children and adults alike to join in the fun. Whether it’s helping to solve a riddle, cheering for the heroes, or booing the villains, this interaction makes for an engaging and memorable experience.

Director Joel Adams, a veteran of the Phuket theatre scene, has once again demonstrated his knack for creating productions that are both entertaining and thought-provoking. His direction ensures that the pace is brisk, the humor is sharp, and the emotional beats resonate, making “Treasure Island” a well-rounded and thoroughly enjoyable show.
